An Apology to Turing

A few days ago, Great Britain’s Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, issued a posthumous apology for the  “inhumane” treatment of Alan Turing, WWII code breaker, pioneering mathematician, and confirmed homosexual.

Turing was convicted of being a homosexual in postwar Britain and lost his security clearance, his job, his reputation, and eventually committed suicide by ingesting a cyanide-laced apple.

Popular geeklore (denied by Apple) says that the rainbow-colored logo of an apple with a bite out of it which was one of Apple’s earlier logo forms is in fact an homage to Alan Turing’s genius in not only working on the team which cracked Enigma and other high-level Nazi ciphers, but also for his advances in early computer creation and advances in the computer field.
